Question
Answer
Fiberous Joints   Held together by Dense Connective Tissue containing collagenous fibers.
Types of Fiberous Joints   1) Syndesmosis 2) Suture 3) Gomphosis
Syndesmosis Joint   Bones bound togther by interosseous ligaments Flexible and may be twisted ex) distal ends of tibis and fibula (tibofibular articulation)
Suture   Only between flat bones of the skull no movement
Gomphosis Joint   Formed by the union of cone-shaped bony proces in a bony socket. ex) tooth fastended to jaw bone no movement
Cartilaginous Joints   Bones connected by Hyaline Cartilage or Fibrocartilage
Tyoes of Cartilagenous Joints   1) Synchondrosis 2) Symphysis
Synchondrosis   Bones united by bands of Hyaline Cartilage. Temperary structures that dissapear during growth. No movement aftergrowth. Connects: epiphysis and diaphysis sternum and first rib
Symphysis   Articular surfaces seperated by thin layers of hyaline cartilage attached to band of fibrocartilage. Limited movement when back is bent or twisted. ex) joints btwn bodies of vertebrae.
Synovial Joints   Articulating bones surrounded by a joint capsule of ligaments and synovial membranes; ends of articulating bones covered by hyaline cartilage and seperated by synovial fluid.
Ball and Socket   Ball-shaped head of one bone articulates with cup-shaped socket of another. Movements in all planes. ex) shoulder, hip.
Condyloid   oval-shaped condyle of one bone articulates with elliptical cavity of another. Variety of movements, but no rotation.
Gliding   Articulating surfaces are neraly flat of slightly curved. Back and forth (sliding) and twisting. ex) wrist and ankle
Hinge   Convex surface of one bone articulates with concave surface of another. Flexion and extension. ex) elbow, joints of phalanges, back.
Pivot   Cylindrical surface of one bone articulates with ring of bone and fiberous tissue. Rotation. Joint btwn proximal ends of radius and ulna, neck.
Saddle   Articulating surfaces have both concave and convex regions; surface of one bone fits the complementary suface of another. variety of movements mainly in 2 planes. joint btwn carpal and metacarpal of thumb.
