x-ray fact   because most x-rays pass through the skin and other body tissues, the x-rays strike the photographic film beneath the area.  
MRI   a method for taking clear images of both of the bones and soft tissues of the body.  
Preventing skeletal system injuries   Simple preventive measures include warming up before exercises, wearing protective gear, and exercising in safe places.  
involuntary muscles   not under your conscious control.  
voluntary muscles   muscles that are under your control.  
muscle tissue   three kinds of tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac.  
skeletal muscles   a muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton.  
tendon   a strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone.  
smooth muscles   involuntary. They work automatically to control many types of movements.  
cardiac muscle   has characteristics in common with both smooth and skeletal muscles.  
muscles at work   because muscle cells can only contract, not extend, skeletal muscles must work in pairs.  
epidermis   the outermost layer of the skin.  
melanin   a pigment, or colored substance, that gives skin its color.  
dermis   the lower layer of the skin.  
pores   openings in your skin.  
follicles   structures within the dermis.  
skin care   eat properly, drink enough water, limit your exposure to the sun, and keep your skin clear and dry.
