War of the Austrian Succession   1740 to 1748   Began when Prussians invaded Austrian Silesia. Maria Theresa of Hapsburg keeps her throne in Austria, but the power of Germany shifts to Prussia and the Holy Roman Empire declines.

The Jacobites' Struggles and Revolts   1701 to 1746   The Jacobites try to take over the English throne.

Seven Years' War   1756 to 1763   Austria, France, Sweden, Russia, and Spain fight Prussia, Britain, and Hanover for control of Europe. War ends with the Treaty of Paris.

Capture of Acadia   From 1603 (French) to 1750s (British).   Nova Scotia, or Acadia, was captured by the French and later by the British, who sent all of the Acadians out of their land to the colonies.

French and Indian War   1754 to 1763   The French fight the British. Also ended by Treaty of Paris.

King Philip's War   1675 to 1676   Wampanoag tribes rise against settlers. Ends after Wampanoag lose (but 10% of males in Massachusetts were killed).

King William's War   1686 to 1697   English and French settlers fight, but neither achieve much.

Queen Anne's War   1702 to 1713   English take Acadia and destroy St. Augustine (Spanish).

King George's War   1744 to 1748   British capture Louisbourg (French fort) and return it for Madras (in India) in 1748.

Pontiac's Rebellion   1763 to 1766   Pontiac, chief of the Ottawa and a confederacy of Algonquin tribes, attacked places from the Great Lakes to Virginia, killing around 200 settlers. The British made peace with him in 1766 before hiring a Native American to assasinate him in Illinoi in 176

American Revolution   1775 to 1781   British verses Americans (who want freedom from the crown). Ends with the surrender of the English to the Americans. The British recognize the freedom of the newly-formed States in 1783.

Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys' attack   1775   Attacked Fort Ticonderoga and win the first colonial victory in the American Revolution.

Massacre of the Mamluks   1811   The Mamluks ruled Egypt from 1249 to 1517 and again during the 1700s. When Mehmet Ali Pasha conquered them in 1811 and controlled Egypt, he invited the commanders to a banquet in Cairo where they were massacred.

Pugachev's Rebellion   1773 to 1774   Rebels took city of Kazan and promised to abolish serfdom, tax, landlords, and military service but Pugachev was defeited.

Russia gains Black Sea Coast   1792   Ottomans no longer control Black Sea and Russia builds powerful navy.

Russia annexes Crimea   1783   Ottomans no longer have control of Crimea (Russians had already taken Azov from them earlier)

Capture of Rangoon   1824   British commander Sir Archibald Campbell leads 11,000 soldiers to capture Burmese capital of Rangoon in revenge for Burmese king's attack on British's Indian lands.

Anglo-Burmese war   1824 to 1826   Britain fights Burma because Burma had supported Britain's enemies living close to Bengal.

Reign of Terror   September 1793 to July 1794   Around 18,000 people guillotined during Reign of Terror.

Storming of Bastille   July 14, 1789   Outbreak of revolution begins when Parisians storm the Bastille, prison where many popular leaders were impisoned by king. "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity."

Napoleonic Wars   1797 to 1815   Napoleon tries to change all of Europe but is finally exiled when Britain opposes him.

Napoleon is exiled to Elba   1814   Napoleon is exiled to Elba, but escapes.

Battle of Waterloo   1815   Napoleon's last battle in Belgium, where he is defeated.

Napoleon's death on St. Helena   1821   Napoleon dies in exile on St. Helena.

Slaves' Revolt   1791 to 1804   National Assembly in Paris gives vote to slaves in Santo Domingo. Plantation owners refuse. 100,000 slaves rebelled. Napoleon sent troops and a long civil war was led by Toussaint l'Ouverture, ex-slave who declares himself ruler of the island in 1801.
