Flexion   Decreases the length of the muscle. Eg. Bending or folding

Lateral Flexion   Decreasing the size of the angle between the lateral surfaces of the body. Eg. lat flexion of trunk brings the trunk closer to the hip

Extension   Increases the length of the muscle. Return from flexion

Abduction   moves a bone away from the midline

Adduction   moves a bone towards the midline

horizontal adduction   moves a bone toward the midline of the body at a horizontal level

Rotation   the pivoting of a bone on its own axis

Inversion   Turns the sole of the foot inward

Circumduction   Causes the bone to describe the surface of a cone as it moves eg. sundials

Supination   Movement of the forearm that turns the palm forward eg. anatomical position

Pronation   Turning the forearm so that palms are down, back of hand forward

Elevation   Raising a part eg. shrug shoulder

Depression   Lowering a part eg. droop shoulder

Protraction   Moving a part forward eg. chin forward

Retraction   Moving a part back eg. chin backwards
