Chapter 4.4 Metamorphic Rock

        Help!

Question
Answer
Metamorphic Rocks   Rocks in which the structure, texture, or composition of the rock has changed.
🗑
How changes in rock occur   All three types of rocks can be changed by heat, pressure, or a combination of both.
🗑
How heat and pressure change a rock   Heat and pressure cause the minerals in a rock change.
🗑
Contact Metamorphism   Magma comes in contact with igneous rock intrusions. The increase in temperature causes the minerals to change into other types of minerals.
🗑
Regional Metamorphism   Pressure builds deep below the earth's surface or when large pieces of the crust collide. The increase in temperature and pressure causes rocks to become deformed and change chemically.
🗑
Index Minerals   Metamorphic Minerals that can only form at certain temperatures and pressure and can be used by scientists to estimate temperature, pressure, and depth at which a rock undergoes metamorphosis.
🗑
Two textures of Metamorphic Rock   Foliated or Nonfoliated
🗑
Foliated   Mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands.
🗑
Nonfoliated   Mineral grains are not arranged in planes or bands.
🗑
Recrystallization   Minerals crystals that change in size or composition due to heat and or pressure.
🗑
Deformation   Change is the shape of a rock caused by the force placed on it. Rocks can be squeezed or stretched and rocks can bend or fold.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
