Irritant contact subjective criteria   Onset within minutes to hours of exposure. Pain, burning, stinging or discomfort exceeding itching, onset w/in 2 wks of exposure, many people affected, sharp borders, evidence of gravitational influence, lack of tendency to spread

Irritant contact dermatitis associations   occupation (see if it clears when on vacation), water, soaps, detergents, wet work, solvents, greases, acids and alkalis, fiberglass, particulate dust, low humidity

Corrosive necrotizing effects of chromates   ICD chrome ulcers

Sensitization may be down-regulated in this type of dermatitis   atopic dermatitis. Patch testing is useful

Locations relatively resistant or uncommon in allergic contact dermatitis   scalp, palms, soles, mucous membranes

Systemic allergic contact dermatitis   After topical sensitization to an allergen, oral ingestion of the allergen causes diffuse reaction. Ex: using topical benedryl, and then later rxn to oral benedryl

Toxicodendron plants   poison ivy, poison oak, mango, lacquer tree, cashew nut (raw), indian marking nut, black varnish tree

Sorbic acid is found in   foods and pharmaceuticals

Provocation use test or open test   Apply substance to antecubital fossa twice daily for one week. Can help distinguish irritant from allergic reaction and confirm allergic reaction

patch test indications   if the dermatitis is: chronic, recurrent, deterrent to work/life activities

Can you patch test acute dermatitis?   NO. Avoid testing, wait until it calms down. ANGRY BACK SYNDROME
