Poetry term
Term definition
alliteration   The repetition of beginning consontant sounds.

assonance   the reppition of vowel sounds.

  The thesis of the poem. Whatever the poem is trying to say about life or human nature or the subject of the poem.

tone   The speaker's attitude toward the subject.  
🗑
metaphor   When a thing is compared to another thing WITHOUT using the word "like or "as" i.e. -- I am the moonlight in your eyes. In this case "I" is being compared to "moonlight"

simile   When a thing is compared to another thing using the word "like" or "as"  
🗑
image   Concrete sensory details. This is NOT limited to the eyes. These sensory details also include touch, smell, taste, and sound.

symbol   an object in a poem that stands for itself AND for something more profound than itself.

personification   to describe an inanimate object as if it were a human being. ("The chapstick was speaking to me as if it were very unhappy.")

diction   Both the choice and the order of words. Ask: "Are the words simple or complex?" and "Are the words put together in an ordinary or unusual fashion?"
