Slavery   The holding of slaves.  
States' Rights   Legislation passed by Parliament in 1765 that imposed a tax on newspapers, legal documents, andlicenses.  
Nullification   To declare invalid.  
Missouri Compromise   Legislation passed by Congressin 1820 by which Maine entered the Union as a free state, Missouri entered the Union as a slave state, and slavery was prohibited north of the southern border of Missouri.  
Compromise of 1850   Legislation passed by Congressby which California entered the Union as a free state, slave trading was ended in the District of Columbia, Texas gave up its claims to New Mexico in exchangefor money, residents of the territories of New Mexico and Utah woul  
GA Platform   The platform established Georgia's conditional acceptance of the Compromise of 1850.  
Kansas-Nebraska Act   Legislation that created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and that contained a clause on popular sovereignty that negated the Compromise of 1850.  
Dred Scott Decision   Scott filed a lawsuit claiming he was free since he had lived in a free state. The justices said Scott could not sue because he was a slave, and slaves were not citizens. The Court also said Congress had no right to stop slavery in territories.  
Election of 1860   The Republican party grew, and Lincoln was elected president.  
Alexander Stephens   Leader of the Whigs, congressman from Georgia. Then joined Democrats. He was against seceding, but was then named VP of the Confederacy.
