Missouri Compromise   In 1820, Northern states and Southern states agreed to divide the Louisiana Purchase evenly. Balanced Rule: Every time a free state joined the Union, so would a slave state.

Kansas-Nebraska Act   In 1854, southern politicians repealed the compromise of 1820 and said that every new state could be a slave state if it wanted to.
