Axes   The horizontal line and vertical that are used to represent the variable quantities on a graph. For example, in the graph below, the horizontal axis represents width and the vertical axis represents length.

Coordinates   Numbers that represent the location of a point on a graph. For example, if a point is 3 units to the right and 7 units up from the origin, its coordinates are (3,7).

line graph   A graph in which points are connected with line segments.

ordered pair   A pair of numbers that represent the coordinates of a point, with the horizontal coordinate of the point written first. For example, the point with horizontal coordinate “3” and vertical coordinate “7” is represented by the ordered pair (3,7).

origin   The point where the axes of a graph meet. The origin of a graph is usually the “0” point for each axis.

variable   A quantity that varies, or changes. For example, in a problem about the sizes of buildings, the height and width of the buildings would be variables.
