DEFINITIONS
Alloy   A solid mixture of two or more metals such as steel, brass, bronze  
Amalgam   An alloy containing Mercury  
Boiling point elevation   The raising of the boiling point of a solvent that occurs when a solute is dissolved in it  
Colligative properties   Physical properties of solutions that depend on the quantity of solute particles but not the kind of solute particles  
Freezing point depression   The lowering of the freezing point of the solvent when a solute is dissolved in it  
Miscible   Property of a substance that are completely soluble in each other  
Saturated solution   A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a particular solvent at a particular temperature  
Solute   The substance that dissolves in the solvent  
Solvent   The substance in a solution that determines whether the solution is a solid, liquid, or gas; the dissolving medium  
Supersaturated Solution   A solution that contains more solute than it normally can dissolve at that particular temperature
