Value of assessment depends on:   Reliability- The degree to which a measurement is consisted. Validity-The degree to which a tech. measures what it is designed to measure. Standardization- Application of certain standards to ensure consistency across different measurements.

Classification System:   A system of distinct categories, indicators, and nomenclature for different pattens of behavior, thought processes, and emotional disturbances.

Axis I:   Clinical syndromes and other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention.

Axis II:   Personality disorders and mental retardation

Axis III:   General medical conditions

Axis IV:   Psychosocial and Environmental Problems (Death of a family member, social isolation, homelessness, extreme poverty, etc.)

Axis V:   Global assessment of functioning

Clinicians primarily use four methods of assessment:   Observations, interviews, psychological tests and inventories, and neurological tests.
