Social Reality   The assumption of a 'real' world of material circumstances that are reflected through the media, with varying degrees of accuracy.

Meaning   Refers to the 'message' or content of mass media.

Causation and determinism   Attempts to solve Q's of cause and effect relating to the consequences of media messages on individuals and also the historical Q's of the rise of media institutions in the first place and reasons for their characteristics of content and appeal.

Mediation   The media creates channels and platforms for info/ideas to circulate. Meanings are formed and social/cultural forces operate through the media. The process influences the meaning received and allows reality to be adapted to demands of media presentation.

Identity   The mass media influences identity formation, maintenance and dissolution. They can drive and reflect social change.

Cultural difference   Mass communication is affected by differences of culture at the level of individual, subgroup, nation, etc. The production and use of mass media are cultural practices that resist the universalising tendencies of the mass-produced content.

Governance   The means by which the media are regulated by laws, rules, customs, codes and market management. These evolve in response to changes in technology and society.
