Paleontology   The science that deals with the study of past life.

Relative Dating   Determining whether an object or event is older or younger than other objects or events.

Geologic Record   A geologic history of the Earth.

Igneous Rock   Rock that forms when magma cools.

Metamorphic Rock   Rock that forms when any type of solid rock changes into another type of rock because of temperature or pressure changes.

Sedimentary Rock   Type of rock that forms from fragments of other types of rocks.

Superposition   The principle that younger rocks lie above older rocks in undisturbed sequences.

Unconformity   A surface that represents a break in or a missing part of the geologic record.
