| plebian | A common farmer; trader; or craftworker in ancient Rome. |
| patrician | A member or the noble families who controlled all power in the early years of the Roman Republic. |
| Livy | A Roman historian who stated that the plebeians rebelled in 494 B.C., demanding changes in the government. |
| Republic | A form of goverment in which citizens elect representatives to speak or act for them. |
| Representatives | A person who is elected by citizens to speak or act for them. |
| Tribunes | An elected leader of ancient Rome who represented the interests of the plebeians. |
| Twelve Tables | The earliest written collection of Roman laws, drawn up by patricians about 450 B.C., that became the foundation of Roman law. |
| Forum | A clearing, which serves as the center of life in Rome. A meeting place wehre senators met and citizens pleaded thier cases before judges. |
| Carthage | A City based in present-day Tunisia, on the northern coast of Africa. Controlled much of the land around the western Mediterranean, including Sicily. |
| Punic Wars | A series of conflicts beteen Rome and Carthage in the 200s B.C., ending in a victory for Rome. |
| Hannibal | In 218 B.C., when he was 29 years old, he led an army against the forces of Rome. |
