-During the late 1800s 25 million immigrants came to America through Ellis Island and Angel Island -People traveled here in steerage - which is the lowest part of the boat designed for cargo and livestock -The journey was approximately two weeks long in cramped quarters with scarce food and supplies -Once they arrived in America they had to live in tenements which were cramped quarters with no indoor plumbing -There were many push factors which are reasons people left their homeland - some examples include: discrimination and lack of food and jobs -Pull factors attracted people to a country - they include: jobs, freedom, food, and homes -Many families lived in small tenements -Children often had to come over alone and work -Families were sometimes split up because of health reasons |
