I. Early Theories on Life and its beginnings
A. Spontaneous Generation
1. Life could just appear from non-living materials.

a. Flies grew from meat left out

b. Mice sprung out of open bags of laundry and/or rice
2. Francesco Redi did an experiment proving spontaneous generation false.
B. Lamarck's theory of use and disuse.
1. This was the idea of acquired traits.
2. Example: giraffe's exceptionally long neck was acquired by stretching to reach leaves at the top of a tree.
