Darius persian ruler who wanted revenge on the Athenian navy. and in 490 B.C the persians landed on the plain of Marathon 26 miles from Athens.(Darius died in 486 B.C.)
Xerxes Was the new Persian monarch after Darius who cowed revenge and planned to invade Greece.
Delian League After the defeat of the persians, Athens took over the leadership of the entire Greek world. In 478 B.C the Athenians formed a defensive alliance against the Persians.

How were the Greeks able to defeat the Persians? Greeks united and jointly used their resources to defeat Persians.
How did the Athenians react to Persian threat? They abandoned their city and defeated the Persians in a naval battle of Salamis.
What caused the growing conflict between Athens and Sparta? Growing power of Athens in the Delian league.
What is direct democracy as proacticed by the Athenians ? All male citizens are eligible to vote; (only 43,000 out of population of 300,000...only adult men who were free were permitted to be citizens of Athens)
What is a polis? a town/city w/surrounding countryside-the the central focus of Greek life-people shared common identity/goals-Citizens w/"rights" = free men who could vote- citizens w/o rights =free women/children word "politic" derived from polis.
What is an agora? an open place where people could meet- used for assemblies and as a marketplace.
What is an Acropolis part of the POLIS - usually on top of a hill b/c it was a place where people could go in case of attack b/c it was fortified.Sometimes the temples and public buildings were placed on the acropolis.
What is a hoplite? heavily armed foot soldier.had shield, short sword and 9 foot long spear
What is a phalanx? group of hoplites- battle formation was shoulder to shoulder in rectangular shape used shields to form a "wall" like turtle to protect themselves -difficult to defeat if they kept formation.
What/where were some of the Greek colonies- what was the effect of the Greek colonies?are important lands bordering the Mediterrean Sea- including S. Italy, S France, N. Africa(not Eygpt) as well as to the North Thrace -for the grain &food stuff- and land bordering the Black Sea-cities on "Hellespont"& Bosporus.Important b/c spread Greek culture/ideas
