Am. History Chapter 9

QuestionAnswer
Articles of Confederation Made the 13 states united. It happened in 1777.
Hard money or Specie Gold and money which could be accepted as payment for taxes.
Critical Period in American History America had to choose between a united country or individual countries called states. 1783-1787.
Shays' Rebellion A man named Daniel Shays started a rebellion because paper money would not be allowed to pay debts. A few cannon shots from the state militia easily put an end to the rebellion. 1786.
Federalists People who believed that National Government should have all the power.
Constitutional Convention A convention where a new plan of government would be drawn up by the Federalists.
Virginia Plan A plan which suggested 3 separate, but equal forms of government.
Connecticut Compromise This said that one of the houses suggested in the Virginia plan would have proportional representation, and that the other would have equal representation. July 5th, 1787
Federalist Papers Written by John Jay, John Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. These papers supported a strong national government.
The Bill of Rights These were introduced by the Federalists to protect individual rights of the states. July 26th 1788
Father of the Constitution John Madison
The point of Congress. To carry on the war, and to handle foreign and domestic affairs which the states could not handle individually.
The two ways congress could pay for the war? To borrow money or to print new money, both of which came back to haunt it.
The opinion of congress in 1783? It was so low that many countries did not even send representatives to vote in congress.
The two choices of government for America? A union of independent states, or a national government that would control the states.
What was James Madison like? He was brilliant, enthusiastic, and strong-willed. He was a committed Federalist who believed that those who arrived first would be able to dominate the Constitutional Convention, which he attended.
Madison's three point plan for government? A national executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judiciary branch.
The chairman of the Constitutional Convention? George Washington.
The disputing between the federalists was over what? The way individual state voting should be. Large states wanted their needs met, and small states wanted it all to be equal.
What issue split North from South? Slavery
How much of a person was a slave considered to be? 3/5's of a person.
What were the different opinions on the uniting of America? The commercial industry wanted it, as it was necessary for economic prosperity. Creditors liked it, as as strong federal government could collect taxes to pay them with. Veterans liked it, because they wanted their back pay. The federalists also liked it.
Who was the most influential person in deciding the government of the states? George Washington
The first state to ratify? Delaware, followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Georgia.
What was the Constitutions greatest contribution to political thought? Its checks and balances system.
The ultimate problem with the United States? Whatever the people said was considered moral.
The vice president to George Washington. John Adams
Alexander Hamilton's idea to pay for the war. All the states would immediately pay a percentage of it, and then a national bank would be opened, which would pay for debt in the future.
