| EDEMA Control |
Use AROM full and firm |
Repetitive isotonic contractions |
Elevation/ hand on pillow/ above heart ( avoid slings- prevents movement and decreases BP) |
Compression ( gloves/ coban) |
Massage ( move fluid up the arm to heart-MEM) |
Contrast baths and ICE |
| EDEMA |
Collection of fluid in the interstitial space causing swelling |
| Types of edema |
pitting edema- caused by circulatory conditions/ leaves a mark |
Brawny edema- has been there for a long time and turned hard/ more difficult to work with |
| Reasons for edema |
Circulatory conditions |
Kidney failure |
Inflamation after surgery or after masectomy ( kymph was removed) |
Malnutrition |
Burns or trauma |
Diagnosis with rom limitations ( arthritis,, fractures) |
| what does edema cause |
Decrease rom |
Flat hand |
Lack of mobility= disuse= further atrophy |
| Measuring EDEMA |
For baseline of treatment |
See if better or worse based on activity and hand positioning |
Compare measurments of unaffected limb to affected limb |
Compare limb to itself at different times of day |
| Ways to measure |
Volume measurment (ml)( not appropriate for open hand wound, external fixated device, plaster of paris cast |
Circumferential measurement using tape measure or ring sizer ( don't do it too tight, make sure on same spot, use cloth not metal) |
