What is the purpose of bromcresol green in the Snyder media? It givers the medium a green color (not finished answering)
Of glucose? lactobacilli use the glucose to produce acid which is measured by the snyder test.
What does destransurase do and which bacteria is responsible for excreting it? It is excreted by S. mutans. It is an enzyme that is capable of polymerizing sucroses into a larger polymer detran and fructose
What does a yellow result mean after 24 hour incubation? Suggestive that the host being tested is suseptible to the formation of dntal carries.
What is the blood agar plate used for when streaking normal microbrial flora of the throat and skin? alpha and beta hemolytic reactions of strep. and staph
What is the chocolate agar plate used for when streaking normal microbrial flora of the throat and skin? detects neisseria
What is the Mueller-Hinton plate used for when streaking normal microbrial flora of the throat and skin? tests for the presence of diphtheroids
What is the Sabouraud agar plate used for when streaking normal microbrial flora of the throat and skin? Detects yeasts and molds
What is the Mannitol salt agar used for when streaking normal microbrial flora of the throat and skin? used to isolate staph.
What is the coagulase test used for when streaking for identification of human staphylococcal pathogens? the production of coagulase is inactive of an S. aureus strain
Mannitol salt agar? is selective for salt tolerant organisims such as staphylococci. differentiation among staphylococci is predicated by their ability to ferment mannitol.
When identifying streptococcal pathogens, what is teh difference between alph-, beta-, and gamma-hemolyis? Gamma- have no clearing Alpha- has little clearing Beta- has an obvious clearing
What is the CAMP test for? Uses to identify group B streptococci
Which organisms are placed perpendicular to each other on the plate? S. pyogenes and S. agalactiae are both perpendicular to S. aureus
What does the arrow shaped zone indicate? there has been an increased hymolytic effect. (not sure if this is right either pg 180 bottom right group B)
Which group does the bile esculin test differentiate? Differentiates enterococci and group D streptococci from non group D
What are the Enterotube II and API 20E tests used for? used for identifying oxidase negative, gram negative bacteria belonging to the family enterobacteriaceae
What are six tests that are included in the API 20E system? citric acid, H2S, urea, indole, vogus proskauer, nitrate reduction. (theres a lot more on pg 198)
In a healthy person, is urine sterile or unsterile? internal urinary system is sterile, but a diverse community of microbes inhabit the distal urethra. so voided urine will contain a normal level of bacteria
normal bacteriuria levels bacteria from the distal urethra that have entered steril urine on its way out, exogenous, <10,000 ml bacteria.
Dsicuss the advantages of using a diagnostic culture system such as Oxoid Dislide 119. DCS allows quantitation and presumptive identification of uropathogens. ex oxoid dipslide 119 green side cled agar all purpose and differential capabilities. red side mac conkey agar which is selective and differential.
atypical/pathological bacteriuria levels from bacteria that have made there way up through the urethra into the urine system, endogenous, >100,000 ml of bacteria
