Acquit- what a jury or judge sitting without a jury does at the end of a criminal trial if the jury or judge finds the accused defendant not guilty.

Arraignment- the first hearing before the judge after a person is charged with a crime

Indictment- a charge of a felony voted by a grand jury based upon a proposed charge

Remand- to send back

Subpoena- an order of the court for a witness to appear at a particular time and place to testify and/or produce documents in the control of the witness

Summons- a document issued by the court at the time a lawsuit is filed, stating the name of both plaintiff and defendant, the title and file number of the case, the court and its address, the name and address of the plaintiff's attorney, and instructions as to the need to file a response to the complaint within a certain time

Voir dire- the questioning of prospective jurors by a judge and attorneys in court.

Bail- the money or bond put up to secure the release of a person

Appeal- to ask a higher court to reverse the decision of a trial court after the final judgment or other legal ruling

Appellant- the party who appeals a trial court decision he/she/it has lost
