Terms Definitions
Alliteration  The repetition of initial consonant sounds. An example is: What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun.  
Personification  A type of figurative language in which nonhuman subject is given humancharacteristics. An example, sorrow walked through my door and sat down next to me.  
Metaphor  A figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared without the use of "like or as"  
Onomatopeia  The use of words that imitate sounds: Examples: Crash, bang, clang  
Simile  A figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared with the use of "like" or "as"  
Symbol  Anything that stands for or represents something else.  
Allusion  A reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work or work of art.  
Hyperbole  The use of "exxageration" in a work of literature.  
Oxymoron  Two words that create a contradictory term such as "Sweet Sorrow"  
Tone  A writers attitude towards his or her subject.
