4 Categories of Joints:  Synostosis, Synarthrosis, Amphiarthrosis, Diarthrosis
Synostosis:  Bony Joints
2 Bones, Gap between and fused together:  Synostosis
Example of a Synostosis joint:  Mandable; Frontal bone
Fontanel:  Soft spot in infants cranium
Covered in fibrous membrane, allows head to pass through birth canal:  Fontanel
Synarthrosis:  Fibrous joints bound together by short collagen fibers
Little to no movement:  Synarthrosis joints
3 Types of Synarthrosis:  Sutures, Gomphoses, Syndesmoses
Sutures:  Joints between cranial bones
Gomphoses:  Joint between tooth & mandable/Maxilla
Syndesmoses:  Joint between Ulna & Radius; Allows some give but move as one unit
Little to no movement:  Synarthrosis
Amphiarthrosis:  2 bones liked by cartilage
Some movement:  Amphiarthrosis
2 types of Amphiarthrosis:  Synchondrosis; Symphysis
Synchondrosis:  Joints joined by hylene cartilage
Examples of synchondrosis:  First rib & sternum; Metaphysis of long bone
Symphysis:  Bound by fibrous cartilage
Examples of Symphysis:  Pubic bone (birth); Joints between vertebrae
Diarthrosis:  Synovial Joints
Freely moveable joint:  Diarthrosis
Bursa:  Fibrous sac filled synovial fluid; Cushions bones & allows tendons to slide over joint
Examples of bursa:  Shoulders/Knees; High impact joints
Types of Diarthrosis movement:  Ball & Socket; Hinge; Pivot; Saddle; Condyloid; Gliding
Ball & Socket:  Shoulder & Hips
Hinge joint:  One direction; Knee/Elbow
Pivot:  Head of radius
Saddle Joint:  Thumb;Trapezoid/Metacarpal
Condyloid:  Metacarpals & philanges (knuckles)
Gliding:  Wrists/Ankles; Flat joints
