WordDefinition
Variable A symbol, usually a letter, which is used to represent one or more numbers.
Numerical expression An expression consisting of numbers and operations. Example 5 + 5 = 10
Algebraic expression An expression consisting of at least one variable and also consists of numbers and operations. Example b + 3 = 7
Term A number, a variable, or a product and a number and variable.
Coefficient The number part of a term that includes a variable. For example, 3 in the term 3x.
Constant A quantity having a fixed value that does not change or vary, such as a number. For example, 5 in the expression x + 5.
Equation A mathematical sentence formed by setting two expressions equal. Example 3 + 3 = 6
Inequality A mathematical sentence formed by placing inequality symbol between two expressions. A+5<10
Fraction A number expressed in the form a/b where a is a whole number and b is a positive whole number.
Multiplicative inverse Two numbers whose product is 1. Example (3/4) and (4/3) because 3/4 × (4/3) = (4/3) × 3/4= 1.
Percent rate of change A rate of change expressed as a percent. Example: if a population grows from 50 to 55 in a year, it grows by 5/50 = 10% per year.
Ratio A comparison of two numbers using division.
Proportion An equation stating that two ratios are equivalent.
Scale factor A ratio between two sets of measurements.
