Chapter 5 Motion

QuestionAnswer
Force A push or pull that always acts on an object
Gravity The force of attraction between objects
Acceleration A change in a moving objects speed or direction
Friction A force that always acts to oppose motion
Mass A measure that does not change when you go from a high mountain to sea level or to the moon.
Velocity Speed of an object in a particular direction
Reference Point Object that appears to stay in place
Helpful Friction Brakes
Harmful Friction Where's down moving parts
What do you need to know to calculate acceleration? Speed and velocity.
What is part 2 of the Universal Law of Gravity State? Gravitational force decreases as distance increases.
What does acceleration mean? The rate at which velocity changes.
The law of universal gravitation says that gravitational force is related to what and what? Mass and distance
When would someone who is moving, like on a skateboard, not be accelerating? When they have constant speed or direction.
What would a graph for positive acceleration look like? Upward Curve
What is Weight? How much gravity it takes to hold an object.
To produce a change in motion, a force must be? Unbalanced
What type of friction is a mover using when he/she puts furniture on wheels? rolling kinetic friction
How does an unbalanced force cause an object's motion to change? speed, direction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
