Life Science Vocabulary

living organism something that has basic needs to live, such as air, food, water.
nonliving something that does not have basic needs.
organism any living plant or animal.
individual a single organism in an environment.
population all the members of a species living in the same environment
community all the populations of organisms living in an environment.
ecosystem all the living and nonliving things in a certain environment.
habitat a place in an ecosystem where an organism lives.
producer is a plant in an ecosystem. They produce their own food by photosynthesis
consumer are organisms that must eat to get their energy.
herbivore a consumer that eats only plants.
carnivore a consumber that eats only meat.
omnivore a consumer that eats both meat and plants.
scavenger animals that eat dead animals or plants.
environment the surroundings of an organism.
decomposer organisms that break-down dead material so it can be returned to the soil.
predator an animal that hunts and kills other animals for food.
prey an animal that is hunted, killed and eater for food.
energy the needed power to do work (like move and grow)
food chain the transfer (movement) of energy from producers to consumers.
food web an interacting system of food chains in an ecosystem.
energy pyramid shows the amount of energy available to pass from one level of a food chain to the next level.
niche the role (or job) an organism has in its environment.
species a group of organisms of the same kind.
decay to breakdown, rot or decompose.
adaptation (adapt) a characteristic of an organism that helps it to survive in its environment.
