statistics the branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, organizing, and understanding data
data pieces of information, which are often numerical
line plot a diagram that shows the frequency of data
cluster data that is grouped closely together
outlier a piece of data that is separated from the rest of the data
range the difference between the greatest and least numbers in a data set
gap a space with no data
central tendency numbers that describe the middle or center of a set of data
mean the average
median the middle number when ordered from least to greatest
mode the number repeated most often
stem-and-leaf plot a system used to condense a set of data where the greatest place value of the data forms the stems and the next greatest place value forms the leaves
bar graph a graphic form using bars to make comparisons of statistics
Venn diagram an arrangement of overlapping circles used to show how two or more sets of data are related
line graph a type of statistical graph using lines to show how values change over a period of time
circle graph a type of statistical graph used to compare parts of a whole
stem anything to the left of the very last number (everything to the left of the ones place)
leaf the last number (the ones place)
key an explanation of the stem and leaf
inference to derive by reasoning; conclude or judge from premises or evidence
histogram a bar graph that shows the frequency of data within equal intervals
