Experimental Designs

QuestionAnswer
Between Subjects design Participants recieve only one treatment. High internal validity, controls time threats; BUT requires many subjects.
Within Subjects design Participants recieve ALL treatments. Fewer participants required, random error reduced; BUT time and order effects.
Within Subjects: Time threats Attrition, Mortality, History, Maturation, Instrumentation, Regression towards the mean.
Within: Time threats - Attrition Participants dropping out of the study.
Within: Time threats - Mortality Participants dying during the study.
Within: Time threats - History Participant's personal experience affecting study.
Within: Time threats - Maturation Participants may change from first trial to last trial.
Within: Time threats - Instrumentation Mechanical flaw/error in the study.
Within: Order effects Treatment/length of time involved in study has negative effect on participants (Carry-over, testing effects)
Within: Limiting/eiliminating carry-over effect Counterbalancing: changing the order of the administration of the treatment(s).
