Triangular Trade A system in which goods and slaves were traded among the Americas, Britain, and Africa. Created a strong eeconomy for colonists but allowed Britain to control their trade.
Great Awakening a religous movement that swept through the colonies with preachers like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield. Resulted in colonists wanting more politcal equality.
French and Indian War 1754 a war between the colonists and the French over land west of the Mississippi where British won much land and French lost almost all.
Proclamation Act of 1763 A law that preventesd colonists from moving west of the Appalacion Mountains. It made may colonists angry.
Samuel Adams Believed that Parliament could not tax the colonists without their permission. His slogan "No Taxation Without Representation" was widely influential.
Boycott a popular from of protest in which people refused to buy goods. It spread to other colonies.
Stamp Act 1765 This act required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal when they bought paper items. Made colonists angry.
Repeal To take away or take back. Parliament repealed some of the taxes(Townshend Acts). Showed that Parliament could be affected by the colonists'actions; they wanted to avoid conflict if possible.
Townshend Acts 1767 These acts placed duties on glass, paper, lead, paint, and tea. They allowed tax collectors to search for smuggled goods.
Boston Massacre 1770 Colonists called them shootings. People were still angry at the British.
Boston Tea Party 1773 After dumping 340 tea chests over into the Boston Harbor, the colonists headed home to remove their disguises. Showed how angery the colonists were.
Sons of Liberty Secret society called in response to the British tax laws; used violence to terrorize tak collectors. Showed that the colonists were unhappy with the tax lawscolonists could organize and were willing to take on the British.
Intolerable Acts 1774 a series of acts passed by Parliament as a punishment for the Boston Tea Party. Boston Harbor was closed, revoked Ma charter, sent British officials accused of crimes to England to face a friendly trial. Thomas Gage became a new governor of MA.
First Continental Congress 1774 It was a gathering of the delegates from all the colonies in Philadelphia at Carpenter's Hall held in the fall of 1774. It was at this gathering a Declaration of Rights was drafted, that included the right to "life, liberty and property."
Battle of lexington It was the first battle of the Revolutionary War that was fought in Boston. Paul Revere warned the militia soldiers about British soldiers' coming. He was subsequtnly captured.
Minutemen Members of the civilian volunteer militia. These were involved with war of independence.
Second Continental Congress 1775 This was again held in Philadelphia where delegates from 12 colonies debated over war and peace with British. Massachusetts militia was declared the Continental Army and George Washington to be its Commander.
Battle of Bunker Hill 1775 This was fought in Boston on May 10, 1775. The militia had control of strategic location at the to of the hill overlooking the Boston Harbor. However due to lack of ammunitions, they lost to British troop. This battle proved the colonies could win.
Common Sense It is a 47 page pamphlet published in January 1776 that urged separation from Great Britain. It was written by Thomas Paine.
Thomas Jefferson He was main author of the Declaration of Independence. He was one of the delegates and member of the committee during Second Continental Congress in 1776 that declared independence from British.
Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776 This was the day the the Second Continental Congress approved independence of the colonies from Great Britain. Thus the USA was born in that day.
Patriots These were the colonists who chose to fight for independence from Britain.
Loyalists Also called Tories, these were the colonists who remained loyal to Great Britain. This division separated many friends and families.
People ' left out' of the Declaration of Independence Women and African American slaves were left out of the Declaration of Independence.
Who fought (groups) in the American Revolutoion Young men, African American slaves, Native Americans all took part in the American Revolution. Many women contributed to war efforts in other ways such as supplying water, food, clothing and few even took arms
Advantages & Disadvantages of British & Colonial Forces COLONIAL FORCES: Strengths: 1) Fought for a cause they believed in 2)Helped by European nations. Weaknesses: 1) Untrained, poorly equipped soldiers 2) Small navy. BRITISH FORCES: Strengths: 1) soldiers well trained, well equipped 2) Large, powerful navy.
Battle of Trenton 1776 In this crucial battle in NJ, George Washington and his soldiers, crossed frozen Delaware river on Christmas night. They attacked the Hessians by surprise and took defeated them. This was a major victory for the Patriots and for the American Revolution.
Battle of Saratoga 1777 In this battle in New York, the American forces soundly defeated British troops. British Gen. Burgoyne surrendered his entire army. This was one of the greatest victory for the American forces
Battle of Yorktown 1781 This was the last major battle of the American Revolution. George Washington brilliantly used his soldiers as well as French American troops to siege British troops of Cornwallis in Yorktown, VA.
Treaty of Paris 1783 In this Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States; set America's Borders with Spain who controlled Florida. It also allowed Americans to settle and trade to the west of the 13 colonies.
