Manual Muscle Testing of the Shoulder

QuestionAnswer
Coracobrachialis (C6, C7) Shoulder at 90 degrees flexion, flexed elbow, pressure down and out
Biceps Brachii (C5, C6) Supinate, elbow at 80 degrees flexion, pressure elbow into extension
Triceps Brachii (C6, C7, C8, T1) 90 degrees shoulder flexion, extend elbow against pressure
Supraspinatus (C4, C5, C6) Full can test with bent elbow
Teres Major (C5, C6, C7) Scapular lift-off position, pressure just above elbow.
Pectoralis Major (Upper - C5, C6, C7; Lower C6, C7, C8, T1) Horizontal abduction
Pectoralis Minor (C6, C7, C8, T1) Patient laying supine, protracted shoulder, pressure at humeral head
Lattissimus Dorsi (C6, C7, C8) Patient laying prone, adduction and extension of arm
Subscapularis (C5, C6, C7) Scapular lift-off position, pressure just above elbow
Infraspinatus (C4, C5, C6) Patient laying prone, push arm into internal rotation while patient holds external rotation at 90 degrees abduction
Teres Minor (C5, C6) Patient laying supine with elbow at 90 degrees, slight abduction. Patient push into external rotation.
Rhomboids (C4, C5) Break from posterion shoulder adduction and external rotation
Trapezius (C2, C3, C4) Blackburn Exercises
Serratus Anterior (C5, C6, C7, C8) Patient laying supine, shoulder flexed to 90 degrees, pronated forearm, patient push into extention
