Color hue
Color Wheel A circular arrangement of colors as they appear on the spectrum
Primary colors red, yellow, blue... colors that are used to mix the secondary colors
Secondary Colors green, orange, purple... can be mixed from primaries
Warm Colors red,orange, yellow
Cool Colors green, blue, and purple
Analogous Colors colors that are side by side on the color wheel
Intermediate Colors sometimes called tertertiary colors, yellow green, green blue, blue purple, purple red, red orange, orange yellow
Complementary Colors colors opposite to each other on the color wheel. red and green, yellow and purple, blue and orange.
Monochromatic Colors different shades of one color
tint adding white to lighten a color
Shade adding black to darken a color
Neutral Colors brown, black, gray
intensity brightness or dullness of color
Texture element of art that relates to the sense of touch.
Implied texture simulated, is really 2-d
Actual Texture (real) is 3d and you can really feel it
Shape a flat 2-d area with heighth and width
Organic Shape free form, irregular, often found in nature
Geometric Shape precise shapes often used in math, such as circles, squares and triangles
Form has a 3-d area; height, width, and depth: such as a cone, sphere, pyramid, or cube
Negative Space area around the subject matter
Positive Space area occupied by the subject matter
Pattern any element repeated over and over again. It could be repeated in line, shape, or color...
Emphasis the focal point, where your eye is drawn
Balance all parts have equal weight and stability
Symmetrical equal on both sides
Asymmetrical sides are not equal
Radial the elements are equally balanced around the center point
Rhythm repeating elements that create an sense of movement or visual flow
Variation Different!
Proportion the relationship of the parts in the work of art to each other with regard to size and placement.
Unity all elements working together as a team
Contrast Different! unlike things contrast
Watercolor a transparent paint medium
