Unit 1 exam 8th grade

Question 1Answer 2Question 2Answer 2
Convection: Give 2 examples of convection -Pot of soup -Water when it heats and cools Where are Tornadoes often found? Over land where there are thunderstorms. Especially in Tornado Alley.
Radiation: Give 2 examples. -The sun warming the earth -A fire roasting a marshmallow How could changes in the earth's orbit or tilt of the axis cause ice ages? When the orbit or tilt changes, parts of the earth get less direct sunlight and never warm up enough to melt the snow that fell in the winter. This snow compacts and turns into glaciers which grow each year, moving farther and farther from the poles.
If there is a graph and one line on the graph is more peaked and one is more flat. Which is sand and which is water? How do you know? The more peaked line is the sand and the flatter line is water. I know this because water doesn't heat up very quickly or cool down very quickly. Why could Carbon Dioxide cause the plant to get warmer? (greenhouse effect) Our planet is kept warm by the blanket of gases which surrounds our planet. One of these gases is Carbon Dioxide. If we add more CO2 to the atmosphere, it is like adding another blanket, it keeps more heat in.
WATER CYCLE: Explain how clouds are formed. Use words: condensation, dew point, evaporation, water vapor, temperature. When warm, moist are rises, it cools. When is cools enough that it can't hold the water vapor in it, that is dew point. At the dew point, droplets of water form on bits of dust in the air. A cloud is made up of bunches of water droplets. Symbols: H L line with triangles line with half circles What does each symbol mean and what kind of weather it brings? H-high pressure cool, clear weather L-low pressure- warm, rainy weather Line with triangles- cold front-shorter, quick cloud development, lots of rain, possibly storms Line with half circles-warm front-slow moving, light rain last for days;warm air
What is the rain shadow effect? When mountains are high enough, the air that blows over them is forced to rise so much that the water vapor in it turns to clouds. That means one side gets all the rain, the other side gets none. The dry side is said to in a rain shadow.
What conditions are needed for Tornadoes to form? Bodies of air with different temperatures and humidity. Thunderstorms help, also flat areas are good.
What conditions are needed to form Hurricanes? VERY warm, large bodies of water, low wind shear, moist, rising air.
Conduction: Give 2 examples of conduction. -An iron warming a shirt -Pan heating up a pancake
