Sediments Pieces of rock broken off from other rock by weathering
The type of rock that is made from bits of rock cemented and compacted together. Clastic sedimentary rock
Cementation Minerals that were dissolved recrystallize (through evaporation)to hold sediments together.
Compaction squeezing the sediments together
Weathering The process of breaking down rock by things such as wind, water, and ice.
Erosion Carrying sediments from one place to another, by wind, water, ice, and gravity.
Deposition Sediments piling up on top of each other.
Chemical sedimentary rock Rock formed from minerals that were dissolved and recrystallize after evaporation
Organic sedimentary rock Rock with bits of bone, shell, or other once-living matter
lithification The process of forming rock by compaction and cementation
Grain size in clastic sedimentary rocks The size of sediments in the rock
The order of events that create a sedimentary rock WEDCC (weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction, cementation)
A rock that is sometimes listed as chemical sedimentary and sometimes listed as organic sedimentary Limestone - If it has fossils, it is organic, otherwise it is chemical.
A rock that has no visible fossils that is in the organic category. Bituminous coal
