Matter Vocabulary/Definitions

Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Mixture A substance consisting of two or more substances mixed together
States of Matter The physical forms in which a substance can exist; states include solid, liquid, and gas
Solid A state of matter that has definite shape and volume
Liquid A state of matter that has definite volume but an indefinite shape (takes up the shape of the container)
Gas A state of matter that has no definite volume or shape
Physical Property A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance
Chemical Property A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
Density The amount of matter in a given space (mass divided by volume)
Volume The amount of space an object takes up
Weight The measure of force of gravity on an object
Molecule The smallest part of a substance made from more than one atom that still has the properties of that substance
Boiling Point The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
Condensation The process by which a gas changes into a liquid.
Evaporation The process by which a liquid changes into a gas.
Freezing Point The temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid.
Dissolve To mix completely with another substance to form a solution
Melting Point The temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid.
