Mesolithic Period

Why was it called the Stone Age Everything was made from Stone
What does the Mesolithic Period mean? Middle Stone Age
When did they arrive in Ireland and who were they? They arrived in 7,000BC and they were the first settlers in Ireland
How did they arrive and where did they settle? They arrived from Britain by sea in dugout canoes and they settled by rivers and lakes
Reasons why? Gave them easy access to move on, allowed them to hunt for food, they were Nomadic
Describe their homes Huts, made of branches/twigs etc. Sapling was set into the ground, these left the marks of post-holes. Centre of the house was a hearth/ fireplace and over this was placed the spit
Hunter gatherer Self-sufficient hunts and gathers their own food e.g nuts, berries, fish ,birds etc
Nomadic They moved on when the resources around them ran dry
What was flint used for Main resource, was used for staring fires, spears, arrows,harpoons etc
How did they cook their food? On a spit, this rotated over a heated fire and slowly cooked the meat
