atmosphere envelope of gases that surround the Earth
gases in our atmosphere 78% Nitrogen from decaying plants and animals AND 21% Oxygen from plants
air pressure the force of air molecules, measured with a barometer and decreases as you move up
troposhere most of the mass of the atmosphere is here, we live here
stratosphere the ozone layer is located here
mesosphere coldest layer and meteor burn up here
thermosphere split into two: ionosphere and exosphere
heat the transfer of thermal energy from hot to cold
conduction the transfer of heat by direct contact (touching)
convection the transfer of heat by circulation of a liquid or gas (convection currents)
radiation the transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves (sunlight changes into heat)
land vs. water land heats up and cools down quicker than water
causes wind unequal heating of the earth and air likes to move from cool to warm areas
local winds winds that blow over short distances in small areas (land and sea breezes)
global winds winds that blow steadily from specific distances over long periods of time, large areas
