Amazon River Is about 4,000 miles long--extends from the Andes Mountains in Peru to the Atlantic Ocean.
Estuary Rio de la Plata--a partially enclosed body of water where freshwater mixes with salty seawater.
Deforestation The clearing of trees.
Soil exhaustion The soil is infertile because it has lost minerals needed by plants.
Megacity A giant urban area that include surrounding cities and suburbs.
Sao Paulo The largest urban area in South America and forth largest in the world.
Rio de Janeiro The second largest city in South America--major port city--popular with tourists.
Favelas Huge slums in Brazil.
Gauchos Argentina cowboys.
Informal economy A part of the economy based on odd jobs that people perform without government regulation through taxes.
Landlocked Completely surrounded by land with no direct access to the ocean
