Matter

QuestionAnswer
substance type of matter with a fixed composition that CANNOT be separated by physical means
element substance made of atoms with the same identify(water)
compound atoms of two or more elements contained(gold)
mixture material made up of two or more substances that CAN be separated by physical means
heterogenous mixture in which different materials can be easily distinguished(salt water)
homogeneous mixture in which two more substances are uniformly spread(vinegar, salt water)
solution homogenous mixture of particles so small that they cannot even be seen with a microscope and will never settle to the bottom of the container(vinegar, soda)
colloid type of mixture with the particles that are larger than those in a solution(fog, milk, cool whip)
suspension heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle(Italian dressing, muddy pond water)
matter anything that has a mass and takes up space
kinetic theory explains how particles in matter behave .....all mater is composed of particles ....particles are in constant, random motion. .....particles collide with each other and walls of their container
solid definite shape and volume
liquid indefinite shape and definite volume
gas indefinite shape and volume
plasma high temperature gas
temperature related to the average kinetic energy of an object atoms or molecules
thermal expansion increase in the size of a substance when the temperature increases and contracts when cooled ......expectation to rule-when cooled it expands(ice)
physical property characteristics of a material that you can observe without changing the substance(color, size)
chemical property characteristics of a substance that indicates weather it can undergo a certain chemical change(flammable)
physical change a change in size, shape or state of matter; substance DOES NOT change identify when it undergoes phys change
chemical change a change in one substance to another substance
law of conservation of mass the mass of ALL substances present before a chemical change equals mass of ALL substances after the change

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
