Matter
Question | Answer |
---|---|
substance | type of matter with a fixed composition that CANNOT be separated by physical means |
element | substance made of atoms with the same identify(water) |
compound | atoms of two or more elements contained(gold) |
mixture | material made up of two or more substances that CAN be separated by physical means |
heterogenous | mixture in which different materials can be easily distinguished(salt water) |
homogeneous | mixture in which two more substances are uniformly spread(vinegar, salt water) |
solution | homogenous mixture of particles so small that they cannot even be seen with a microscope and will never settle to the bottom of the container(vinegar, soda) |
colloid | type of mixture with the particles that are larger than those in a solution(fog, milk, cool whip) |
suspension | heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle(Italian dressing, muddy pond water) |
matter | anything that has a mass and takes up space |
kinetic theory | explains how particles in matter behave .....all mater is composed of particles ....particles are in constant, random motion. .....particles collide with each other and walls of their container |
solid | definite shape and volume |
liquid | indefinite shape and definite volume |
gas | indefinite shape and volume |
plasma | high temperature gas |
temperature | related to the average kinetic energy of an object atoms or molecules |
thermal expansion | increase in the size of a substance when the temperature increases and contracts when cooled ......expectation to rule-when cooled it expands(ice) |
physical property | characteristics of a material that you can observe without changing the substance(color, size) |
chemical property | characteristics of a substance that indicates weather it can undergo a certain chemical change(flammable) |
physical change | a change in size, shape or state of matter; substance DOES NOT change identify when it undergoes phys change |
chemical change | a change in one substance to another substance |
law of conservation of mass | the mass of ALL substances present before a chemical change equals mass of ALL substances after the change |
