Rocks Vocabulary

Texture Size shape and pattern of the rock's grain.
Grain A particle of a mineral or other rock that gives rock its texture.
Igneous Rock A rock type that forms from lava or magma
Lava Molten rock on the Earth's surface
Magma Molten rock that is beneath the Earth's surface trapped in chambers
Extrusive Rock Igneous rock that forms outside the volcano on the Earth's surface
Basalt Extrusive igneous rock that makes up the oceanic crust
Intrusive Rock Igneous rock that forms inside or beneath the Earths surface from magma
Granite Intrusive igneous rock that makes up most of the continental crust
Sedimentary Rock Rocks that are formed from sediments, remains of plants/animals, or dissolved minerals at the earths surface
Weathering Process of breaking down the rocks at the Earth's surface
Erosion The process to move sediment and rocks on the Earth's surface
Deposition The process when sediment settles out of the water or wind carrying it
Compaction The process that presses and squeezes sediments together.
Cementation The process where dissolved minerals glue particles of sediment together
Sediment Small, solid particles of material from rocks or living things
organic rock Rocks that are formed from the remains of plants and animals
Chemical rock Sedimentary rocks that are formed when bodies of water evaporate leaving mineral deposits
Clastic rock Sedimentary rocks that are formed when rock fragments and sediment are squeezed together
Metamorphic rock Rock that is formed deep underground from extreme heat and pressure
Foliated A metamorphic rock with grains arranged in layers or bands
Nonfoliated A metamorphic rock with a random arrangement of grains
rock cycle A series of processes that changes one type of rock to another type of rock
