Vocabulary Words

Cell Theory A scientific theory that describes the properties of cells.
Function The normal activity or “job” of a cell.
Structure The arrangement of the cell, including the shape and the material of which it is made.
Cell Membrane The protective layer that covers the cell’s surface, acts as a barrier, and controls which materials go into and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm The gel-like substance enclosed within the cell membrane of a cell.
Organelles Structures within a cell that perform specific functions.
Nucleus A membrane enclosed organelle found in eukaryotic cells that contains most of the cell’s genetic material and controls the activities of the cell.
Prokaryotic Cell A simple cell that does not have a nucleus and has few membrane-enclosed organelles.
Eukaryotic Cell A more complex cell that contains a nucleus and more membrane-enclosed organelles.
Unicellular Organism A living thing that consists of only one cell.
Multicellular Organism A living thing that consists of more than one cell.
