cells cells- the basic units of structure and function in living organisms
organ organ- structures composed of one or more tissues that perform a function group or functions in the human body.
system system- several organs working together to perform a function
Digestive System Digestive System- mouth to anus; digest food and get nutrients from food
Excretory System Excretory System- kidneys, skin, and bladder; gets rid of wastes in the blood
Muscular System Muscular System- muscles and tendons; movement
Nervous System Nervous System- brain and nerves; control center
Respiratory System Respiratory System- lungs and bronchi; gas exchange
Skeletal System Skeletal System- bones, ligaments, and tendons; structure and support

Surface Area Surface Area- is the sum of all the areas of all the shapes that cover the surface
Absorption Absorption- nutrients leave the digestive system into your blood, which carries the nutrients to the rest of you body
Nutrients Nutrients- broken down food
Bone Bone- living tissue made of bone cells surrounded by minerals that contain calcium and phosphate.
Cartilage Cartilage- a softer tissue than bone, flexible
Joint Joint- the place where two bones meet
Ligament Ligament- connect one bone to another in the joint
Tendon Tendon- attaches muscle to bone
Marrow Marrow- spongy bone; inside the long and flat bones of the body
Muscle Muscle- made of muscle cells specialized in movement
Musculoskeletal System Musculoskeletal System- muscular and skeletal systems together
Indicator Indicator- a chem. that changes its appearance in different types of solutions
Pulse Pulse- the speed that your heart beats; bpm
Arteries Arteries- carry blood away from the heart
Atrium Atrium- receiving chambers where blood enters the heart.
Blood Vessels Blood Vessels- the tubes that blood travels through
Capillaries Capillaries- very small blood vessels where nutrients and wastes are exchanged
Valves Valves- keep the blood from flowing backwards
Veins Veins- bring blood to the heart
Ventricle Ventricle- pumping chambers; pump blood out of the heart
Blood Pressure Blood Pressure- the pressure that the blood pushes out with on the arteries
Coronary Arteries Coronary Arteries- arteries that carry oxygen to the heart muscle itself
