Rocks and Minerals

Minerals Naturally occurring elements that are not plants or animals. The building blocks of rocks.
Streak The color of the powder produced when a mineral is dragged across a white plate
Luster The way light is reflected on the surface of a mineral
Rock Cycle A continuous process by which rocks are created, changed from one form into another, destroyed, and then formed again
Igneous rock Rock that is formed when lava or magma cools and hardens
Sedimentary rock Rock that is formed by sediment that is deposited over time, often in layers
Metamorphic rock Rock that has been changed by extreme heat and pressure
Magma Melted rock from inside the earth
Intrusive igneous rock Igneous rock that is formed when magma cools slowly inside the earth
Extrusive igneous rock Igneous rock that is formed when lava cools quickly on Earth's surface
Lava Melted rock that has reached the surface of the earth
Sediment Small pieces of rock, sand, dirt, and other naturally occurring substances
Fossils The preserved remains of plants or animals
