Periodic Table of the Elements A diagram of the elements arranged in order of increasing number of protons.
Groups The vertical columns of the PTE.
Periods The horizontal rows on the PTE.
Families Multiple elements on the Periodic Table having similar properties.
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; the atomic number is the smaller number without a decimal.
Atomic Mass The total of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom; the larger number with the decimal.
Isotope An atom of an element that has the same number of protons as another atom of the same element, but a different number of neutrons.
