TermDefinition
Judaism The religion of the Hebrews and Israelites.
Monotheism Worship of only one God.
Canaan Where the Hebrews settled and became known as the Israelites.
Moses Brought the Ten Commandments, a code of moral laws, to the Israelites.
Talmud A book with commentaries explaining Jewish laws.
Yom Kippur What Jews consider the holiest day of the entire year.
Rabbis Jewish religious leaders and teachers.
Judah Conflicts between jigs forced Israelites to break into two kingdoms. The Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah.
Abraham The Jews claimed him as their ancestor. According to the Bible, God promised Abraham that his descendants would be a mighty nation.
Torah The law. It is the first part of the Hebrew bible. It is the most sacred text of Judaism. A central part of all Jewish religious services is reading passages from the Torah.
Passover Holiday where Jews celebrate the Exodus.
Temple With the riches they gained through trade, the Israelites built a great building fir the worship of God in Jerusalem.
Hanukkah The holiday celebrates the miracle of the oil lamp in the temple.
