Vocabulary Words

Scientific Experiment An organized investigation carried out to test a hypothesis under controlled conditions.
Procedure A step-by-step description of how you will carry out your scientific experiment or investigation.
Independent Variable The one variable that you are testing in your experiment and the only factor which causes change in the dependent variable. This factor is also known as the test variable or manipulated variable.
Dependent Variable The measure of the response or change that has occurred due to a change in the independent variable. This variable is also known as the response variable.
Standardized Variables All the factors in a scientific experiment which must be kept the same in order to know that observed changes are due to a change in the independent variable only. These variables are also known as constants.
Control Group Another set up of your experiment that is the same in every way except it does not have the independent variable applied to it and its purpose is to have something to compare the results of your experiment to.
Precision The consistency of measurements.
Accuracy The difference between a measurement and the actual value.
