Patterns in the Natural World
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Cycle | A series of events that are regularly repeated in the same order. |
Water Cycle | The cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land. |
Evaporation | The changing of a liquid into a gas, often under the influence of heat. |
Condensation | The process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water. |
Precipitation | Water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail. |
Transpiration | the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. |
Run-off | When rain hits saturated or impervious ground it begins to flow overland downhill. |
Groundwater | The water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock. |
Climate | The average pattern of weather for a particular region over a long period of time. |
Ocean | The entire body of salt water that covers about 71% of Earth |
Weather | The daily conditions of the atmosphere in terms of temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, and moisture. |
Region | An area or division, especially part of a country or the world having definable characteristics |
Polar | The part of the Earth's surface forming a cap over a pole; characterized by very cold climate |
Arid | A region characterized by a severe lack of available water, hindering or preventing the growth and development of plant and animal life. |
Aquifer | An underground layer of water-bearing rock. |
Carbon Dioxide | A colorless, odorless gas produced when any substance containing carbon is burned, product of breathing and of fermentation. Plants absorb carbon dioxide |
Oxygen | A chemical element found in the air as a colorless odorless tasteless gas that is necessary for life. |
Photosynthesis | The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. |
Carbon Dioxide-Oxygen cycle | The organic circulation of carbon from the atmosphere into organisms and back again |
Fresh Water | Water found in rivers, lakes, glaciers, ice sheets, and groundwater that contain little or no salt. |
Salt Water | Water found in oceans, and a few lakes, that contains 3-4% salt. |
Accumulation | A build-up or gathering of something that occurs over time. |
