What is Atticus' explanation for Tom's attempted escape? Do you agree with Atticus? Said that Tom had given up all hope and tried to escape himself. Atticus was right because if he believed that Atticus wasn't going to be able to get him out then he did what he thought was right.
What does Miss Maudie mean when she says to Aunt Alexandra (speaking about Atticus), "Whether Maycomb knows it or not, we're paying the highest tribute we can pay a man. We trust him to do right. It's that simple." Atticus tried his best to defend Tom and he fought for his rights.
Who tells Helen Robinson about Tom's death? Atticus and Calpurnia
What does Underwood write about Tom Robinson in the newspaper? He says the Tom Robinson's death was like the senseless killing of songbirds by hunters and children. There should be no reason peopl should kill a cripple.

What are "the secrets courts of men's hearts"? In what way are hearts like courts? It is clear that Tom was innocent and nobody liked the Ewell's but because Tom is a black man and the Ewells are white Tom was found guilty. As soon as Mayella screamed, Tom was a dead man. He was perjured.

What does Scout say democracy is? Equal rights for all, special privileges for none.
When Miss Gates teaches the class about democracy and the Jews, what question does it bring to Scout's mind? She doesn't understand why Miss Gates thinks it is terrible that people hate the Jews, but she seems to treat the blacks the way Hitler treats the Jews. Miss Gates is a hypocrite.
Why does Scout's question upset Jem? Do you think there is a simple answer, or any answer to the question ("How can you hate Hitler an' then turn around an 'be ugly about folks right at home?) Gets upset because he is trying to forget what happened at the courthouse. Jem is also having a rough time because he is not big enough to play on the school football team.

The previous year, the children of the town had taken all of the furniture of two women (Tutti and Frutti) and placed it in the basement as a prank (joke).
What happens to Bob Ewell at his new job? Atticus
Why does Atticus say Ewell is mad? He says that after the trial, everyone in Maycomb knows that Ewell lied. They may have convicted Tom, but they knew he was lying.
Comment on the way this chapter reminds the reader of earlier events in the novel. At the start of this chapter (chapter 28) Scout thinks back to the items that were left in the tree for the kids and starts talking about Boo Radley again. This is the first time in quite a few chapters that Boo is talked about.
Why does Jem say that Boo Radley must not be at home? What is ironic about this? Jem says that Boo must not be home because the lights are not on. It would be ironic for Boon not to be home now because Boo never leaves the house.

What explanation does Atticus give for Bob Ewell's attack? Says that Mr. Ewell was a coward and went after his children instead of him.
What does Heck Tate give as a reason for the attack? Said that Mr. Ewell was a type of man that you would shoot before you said hi to him. Also, thinks Mr. Ewell was a drunk.
What explanation does Atticus give for Bob Ewell's attack? Says that Mr. Ewell was a coward and didn't have the guts to go after Atticus himself so he went after his children who are an easier target.
Why does Heck Tate insist that Bob Ewell's death was self-inflicted? In what way is this partly true? Shows how Mr. Ewell might have fallen during the fight and stabbed himself. In reality, it was Boo who killed Mr. Ewell. Boo was trying to save the children. Heck Tate does not want Boo to have to go to court because he is so shy.
Is Heck Tate right to spare Boo then publicity of an inquest? Does not want Boo to have to go to court because he is so shy. If Boo has to go to court, then everyone will know that he saved the lives of the kids. People would then come over to his house & bring cakes & dinners
How did Scout know she was under the tree when someone grabbed her? Jem told Scout that the sand under the is colder on her feet
Who is the man standing in the corner of Jem's room? Boo Radley
How does Scout react to seeing Boo for the first time? She acts like she's seen him every day of her life but she is really shocked.

How do the events of the final chapters explain the first sentence in the whole novel? In the first sentence of the book, Scout says that Jem broke his arm when he was 13. She does not explain how. The end of the book shows that he broke his arm when Mr. Ewell tried to kill him.
How does Scout make sense of an earlier remark of Atticus's as she stands on the Radley porch? Atticus told Scout that you never really understand or know a man until you walk in his shoes. Now that she has gotten to know & understand Boo better, she understand why Boo never came out of the house.
How much of a surprise is it fo find what Boo Radley is really like? Not really surprised that Boo Radley protected the children. The reader gets to know Boo as the story of his family is told by Scout. He was kept secluded (alone) from the world. The townspeople not knowing the truth could only develop their suspicions.
Has the story before this point prepared the reader for this discovery about Boo? Lot of foreshadowing that gives the reader clues to the real Boo. When the children begin to find small treats and trinkets in the tree, Boo is demonstrating acts of kindness, and his effort to reach out.
At the end of the novel, Atticus reads to Scout. Comment on his choice of story. Does it have any connection with themes earlier in the novel and in its ending? The story Atticus reads to Scout connects to the a theme in the novel. The story is almost exactly what the kids go through with Boo Radley. The man in the story that no one really knew could be related to Boo because in the end, he was a really nice man.
