Barrier Islands Coastal islands created from sand, deposited by ocean waves in shallow water
Piedmont An area at or near the base of a mountain range
Fall Line A natural boundary between 2 landform regions with different elevations, marked by rapids or waterfalls
Basin Low areas of land, surrounded by mountains
Hot Spot Place where magma wells up from the mantle through cracks in the Earth's crust

Lichens Small plants consisting of algae and fungi
Alluvial Soils Soils deposited by streams or rivers
Newsprint Inexpensive paper made and used primarily for newspapers
