Properties of Water
Information on water's structure and characteristics
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What molecules make up water and what are there charges? | One oxygen and two hydrogen atoms make up a water molecule. The oxygen atom has a slightly negative charge and the hydrogen atoms have a slightly positive charge. |
What is polarity? | Polarity is a condition in which opposite ends of a molecule have slightly opposite charges but the overall charge of the molecule is neutral. |
Why does salt dissolve in water easily? | Salt dissolves in water easily because the positively charged sodium ion of salt is attracted to the negatively charged oxygen atom of water. The negatively charged chloride ion of salt is attracted to the positively charged hydrogen atom of water. |
What is cohesion? | Cohesion is the attraction between molecules that are alike. This is why some insects can walk on water drops. |
What is adhesion? | Adhesion is the attraction between molecules that are not alike. This is why water can stick to countertops and has a dome shape. |
Why are icebergs less dense than water? | Icebergs are less dense than water because the water molecules form a six-sided pattern when they freeze. There is a lot of space between the molecules, which makes the iceberg less dense. |
When is the density of freshwater the greatest? | The density of freshwater is the greatest at 4 degrees Celsius. |
How are aquatic organisms able to survive the winter? | Aquatic organisms are able to survive the winter because the less dense ice floats on top of the water, insulating it from the cold above. |
